When to consider .gen.nz
A general-purpose New Zealand namespace for a project whose name does not need a commercial or organizational label. Consider how easily visitors can remember and type the full address.
Current namespace rules
InternetNZ Rules version 3.2, effective 17 March 2026, lists .gen.nz as an unmoderated second-level namespace for third-level registrations. It is beneath .nz, rather than a separate top-level domain. Unmoderated does not remove reserved-name, lawful-use, identity or registrar requirements.
The rules allow an identifiable individual over 18 or a lawfully constituted entity to apply through an authorized registrar. Identity evidence can be requested. Confirm the exact name and current requirements before ordering.
Compare annual costs
Read the first-year registration and separate annual renewal in the stated native currency. Check tax, premium classification and required services in the final basket. A registry wholesale tariff is not a consumer quote. Transfer and restoration fees should not be mistaken for renewal.
Choose and maintain the address
Compare .nz, .co.nz and .org.nz for the audience and purpose. Long-term views are annual-pay estimates using current saved renewal rates, not guaranteed future prices. Keep holder and recovery details accurate and verify the expiry after renewing.
For billing, DNS and transfer questions contact the chosen provider; registry policy questions belong with the .nz policy authority. Source: InternetNZ .nz Rules, clauses 1.1 and 2.2.1–2.2.2, reviewed 26 October 2026.
.gen.nz coupon and pricing questions
Do .gen.nz coupons apply at every company?
No. Each code has its own merchant, extension, customer and expiry conditions. Only explicitly scoped offers appear in the extension coupon section. Confirm acceptance in the merchant basket before paying.
Why can the .gen.nz renewal price be higher?
An introductory registration offer can apply only to the first year. Compare the annual renewal and any mandatory charges separately; the cheapest first year may not be the cheapest long-term option.
Are the 2-, 5- and 10-year costs guaranteed?
No. These are estimates of repeated annual payments using the recorded first-year and renewal prices from the same company. Future prices, taxes and optional services can change. Missing renewal prices stay unknown.
For registration rules, use the official registry contact and check the registrar’s eligibility requirements.
